Why it's important to take a step back from your own clutter

When we live with our own clutter for a while, it almost becomes invisible to us.

We barely register the bits and pieces piled up on the tabletops and scattered around the house. We get so used to searching through our Tupperware cupboard for a lid or combing the entire house for a pen that we don’t even consider the effect of disorganisation on our lives.

Whether you’re aware of it or not, that clutter is having an impact on your life. Often, you don’t notice how significant that impact is until the clutter is removed.

Today, we’ll explore those subtle side-effects of living amongst clutter and hear from Miriama, a client I worked with to create a calmer, more organised home.

The Side Effects Of A Cluttered Home

You may think a bit of mess and disorganisation never hurt anyone, but the effects of living in a cluttered environment are well documented.

First up, there are the practical downsides, such as:

  • Not being able to find the things you need easily

  • Spending more time on housework as you work around or try to manage the clutter

  • Not having enough room due to disorganisation

Aside from the inconvenience of clutter, it can also directly affect your wellbeing.

  • You may feel embarrassed to have people over because of the mess.

  • It can be hard to fully relax and enjoy your home without calm, clear spaces.

  • You feel overwhelmed or stressed as the clutter is a reminder of the things you haven’t done.

The Stress

Research has shown that a cluttered environment increases stress levels, reduces productivity, and can even impact our ability to make healthy food choices.

Just like so many people, Miriama was feeling the stress of living in a disorganised environment.

After hearing about me on Caitlyn Taylor’s podcast, The Style Project, Miriama reached out via a free discovery call. We decided she could benefit from my home maintenance service offering.

The biggest challenge she faced was her things not having a dedicated “home” to go to. They ended up all over the place, making it hard to find items when needed and keep everything neat and tidy.

How An Expert Can Help

It can be overwhelming trying to tackle clutter on your own. The job might feel too big, or you don’t know practically how to approach it. Often, it’s purely too much because it’s your own stuff – you are emotionally attached to it and have lived with it so long you just can’t envision a solution.

That’s why having an expert is so valuable.

“Having an expert come in removes the overwhelm. It’s so much easier for someone else to come in and see what needs doing. When you live there, it’s very overwhelming seeing the mess all the time.”
— Miriama (Client)

And if you’re feeling embarrassed about your home or your mess – don’t. A cluttered house isn’t a reflection of who you are as a person. My job is not to criticise or shame you. I’m purely there to help improve your life by decluttering your home.

“It was so effortless and felt very non-judgemental.”
— Miriama (Client)

The Benefits Of A Clutter-Free Home

Being organised and having a tidy, clutter-free home is an empowering feeling. When you walk in the door after a long day, there’s no guilt or frustration – only the bliss of a tidy, organised space.

With less time spent cleaning, feeling guilty, or hunting for items, you may find you have more focus, time, space, and energy.

Your brain is no longer distracted by all the “stuff” around you, providing you with more peace. And it’s far easier to keep things tidy when everything has a place.

“It makes my life so much easier! I am able to put things in their homes. Even my husband knows where it all goes as it’s all labelled.”
— Miriama (Client)

Declutter And Enjoy Your Home Again

Miriama loves her more organised home and easier routines.

Simply removing the items that you don’t need and giving everything a “home” can make the world of difference to how you live and feel. The cool thing is, that you don’t even have to worry about disposing of the things you don’t need any more. Me and my van take care of that for you - gifting or donating any unwanted things to minimise wastage.
